Another ‘tool in the box’ for induction melting expert

According to one definition, induction is “the process of making something happen,” to have control of it. Developing induction technologies that perform in an effective and energy efficient way has been the work of the Inductotherm Group for more than seven decades, and a new system the company installed recently is continuing that progress.

Inductotherm Corp recently commissioned its latest, VIP-I® S-Plus™ unit powered by insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology, with an inverter rated at 10MW at Intat Precision Inc, an automotive ferrous foundry in Rushville, Indiana, USA. Along with the various SCR equipment options (including the High Efficiency options), this latest equipment boosts the IGBT side of the range of options. This gives the Inductotherm Group another “tool in the box” that can be considered when selecting the most suitable equipment for a specific application. Having utilised both IGBT and SCR technologies for decades, the company reports that it has witnessed “significant progression” across all the equipment ranges on offer. Although series circuit SCR technology has always been highly efficient, over recent years the development of the specific ‘High Efficiency’ SCR power supplies was another significant step forward in efficiency gains.

This latest development in the company’s IGBT technology has strengthened its range of options in higher power systems and opened up additional options for upgrading some existing mains frequency systems around the globe. Inductotherm’s technology development department has been working on this new type of power supply for over a decade, based on proven technologies and customer requirements. The modular design of VIP-I® S-Plus™ multi-MW units is also another advantage for some site conditions and specific applications. With the continued push towards net zero Inductotherm’s technology development department continues to enhance the company’s range of products enabling customers to make significant efficiency gains that generate attractive returns on their investment.

The new VIP-I® S-Plus™ power supply unit – like the original VIP-I® power supply units – are suitable for larger furnaces and various alloys, and offer reliability, efficiency, and guaranteed melt rates in a compact and versatile package. Intat Precision produces castings for automotive chassis, powertrain, brakes, and other parts that OEMs require. Commissioning this unit represents a leap forward in induction technology, providing unmatched efficiency, precise power control, and reliability for the manufacturing of automotive cast parts. This revolutionary system combines Inductotherm’s decades of expertise with the latest advancements in insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology, resulting in a solution that meets the demands of modern automotive production. While VIP-I® power supply units are available in a wide range of power levels up to 750kW, VIP-I® Plus™ power supply units can achieve power levels even higher. The units can be fully configured with a variety of options. Standard features include: advanced IGBT power components, husky copper bus bars, precise and responsive digital controls and informative diagnostics. In a standard configuration, these units also include an intelligent digital control board with fibre optic clear signal processing and a touchscreen display for control and data entry.
